Coverage rates assume a thin, even glue film. End grain absorbs 3–4× more — apply a seal coat first and let it tack before the final coat. Open time for PVA is typically 5–10 min; assemble and clamp within that window.

Coverage rates & tips

Coverage rates assume a thin, even film — roughly what a notched spreader or foam roller leaves behind. Brush application tends to use more; squeeze bottles less. Always buy slightly more than calculated — you can't top up mid-glue-up.

  • End grain absorbs 3–4× more glue than long grain. Apply a thin seal coat, let it tack, then apply the final coat just before assembly.
  • Open time for PVA is 5–10 min at room temperature; cool temperatures extend this, heat shortens it.
  • Polyurethane glue expands as it cures — use less than you think, and clamp firmly to prevent the foam from pushing joints apart.
  • Epoxy: mix only what you can use in the pot life. Once mixed, heat accelerates cure.
